The enormous freshwater stingray is easily distinguished from other types because of its pointed snout. Unfortunately, its species is listed as endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, but its existence provides hope for their survival.
“Even as I was taking measurements and scrubbing her skin for the surgery, I could hardly believe she was real,” Eschenroeder says in a statement per South West News Service. “Her tail was as big around as my arm!” Guinness World Records confirmed the startling discovery on June 23 as the world’s largest freshwater fish to ever be officially recorded. The researcher who helped measure the stingray, 33-year-old Jack Eschenroeder, described the discovery as “surreal.” Onlookers were stunned as the stingray was measured. CAMBODIA - The world’s largest freshwater fish has been discovered, and it’s the same length as a Mini Cooper! The massive stingray was caught in the Mekong River, Cambodia, and was measured a whopping 13-feet long and 661 pounds.
